ARGENTINE TANGO is a dance of passion, elegance, grace, speed and intricate steps. It is intensely individualistic and improvisational. Born around 1880 in the River Plate Region, Tango is an exclusively urban phenomenon whose major development took place in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Tango became the quintessential cultural and individual expression of the ostracized lower classes. These were composed of European immigrants, criollos and gauchos. In its infancy, Tango was danced solely among the men as a means to perfect the intricate steps and to compete for the attention of the few available women. Tango reached its pinnacle in the 1940's. After many ups and downs, it is once more an integral part of Argentine culture, both in its Salon (social) and Exhibition (theatrical) forms. It is equally popular amongst Hispanic and crossover audiences, with a very large following in many parts of the United States, Europe, Japan, Mexico and Latin America.
